 About me

I was born in Kandy, Sri Lanka and was fortunate to be surrounded by fabulous art work by renowned local artists such as David Paynter and Senaka Senanayake who influenced my appreciation of art in my early years. As my dad was a teacher in the school where David Paynter studied (Trinity College, Kandy), I grew up amongst some of his famous murals that were larger than life. Although I was constantly sketching and painting whilst in school, sadly I didn't have the opportunity to study art.

In 1989 I moved to the UK and settled in Hertfordshire with my husband and spent the next decade dedicating my time raising our two sons. My passion for art was re-ignited when helping out our sons with school projects and class activities. I enrolled at Stanmore College to study water colour painting and the tutor later recommended that I join a foundation course in art at Harrow Art Centre. In 2002 I commenced formal training under the accomplished fine art tutor Angela Pearcey in drawing and painting skills and haven't looked back. Angela has inspired me through the years and encouraged me to explore numerous techniques, styles and media which has resulted in the contemporary work that I produce.

I draw my inspiration from my surroundings and travels, painting primarily in oils. I am open to experimenting with different styles and subject matter. My work so far has been a result of my fascination with reflections on shiny surfaces, transparency in glass, drama created by light and shadow, movement, perspective and form. I enjoy the challenge of using other media depending on the subject and texture I wish to replicate, be it figurative or abstract. My aim is to produce a painting that evokes a sense of joy or nostalgia whilst being therapeutic for me to create.

Recycling used fabric and yarn by felting to produce abstract pieces of textile art is another exciting direction I have taken. In a throw-away culture that's contributing to landfill, I take pride in creating something artistic by recycling colourful garments that were once loved and worn until they were threadbare. I often use natural fibres such as silk, linen and wool from old soft furnishings as well to build up layers that create the desired texture.

In the past I have been a member of Harrow Art Society and presently an active member of Pinner Sketch Club since 2012. As Vice Chairman of Pinner Sketch Club from 2013- 2021, I was involved with organising the Annual Art Exhibition, Art In The Village and numerous events within the club. I show and sell my work at various exhibitions as well as privately. My work is held in private collections in the UK, Sri Lanka, USA and New Zealand.
